DRIVING UP COSTS

As if the cost of motoring wasn’t bad enough with the high cost of fuel, increases to the road fund license and the threat of road pricing, the EU looks set to add to the misery by scrapping a rule that enables thousands of small independent garages to carry out work on various models of car.

The EU is expected to scrap Block Exemption which which gives the independent garages access to parts and computerised information required for the complex technology of today’s cars. This will deny the smaller, and cheeper, garages access forcing motorists to use costly main dealers.

According to an article in the Daily Telegraph, Wednesday 10th September 2008, it reported that the AA believe these changes which take effect from 2010, will affect 20 million motorists

Most surveys done show that the majority of motorists are happier using a small garage, they feel they are not being ripped off and pay less for a better service.  Norman who runs 'On The Mend', who works out of what looks to be a real back-street garage in Cheston Road, Birmingham, has been repairing and servicing my cars for over thirty years and giving great service.  I hope he can keep my old Rover roving for a good few years yet.

This is yet another prime example that there are no benefits of being in Europe which is driving us to despair and distraction.
